The two basket figs: Divine grace and Divine rejection

Text Jeremiah 24:1-10; Hebrews 6:4-12

In this first reading, the two basket figs represent two groups of people, very good and very bad. In this second reading, the two lands represent two groups of people: those who produce good fruit and those who produce thorns and thistles. In both readings, the bad people cannot be restored, but the good people receive divine blessings and eternal life.

DIVINE GRACE

These are people God is happy with; they are inclined to obey Him. Grace demands repentance and cooperation with God, and they do so. E.g, Noah, Paul, Rehab. Wherever there is anything good, it is Divine Grace, God’s favour that makes it possible (Eph 20:8-10; 2 Cor 6:1-2). Most people quickly forget this, and think it is by their own strength… May the Lord look upon us and grant us divine favour always.

DIVINE REJECTION

There comes a time when, according to God’s Orders, it is impossible to be restored or to be saved (most people do not know this); these are bad figs, land that produces thorns and thistles-those who receive God’s blessings but disobey God. These people backslide, and they leave Jesus Christ.

Better things in life- our salvation and Jesus Christ

In life, there are better things, such as the salvation of your soul in Christ Jesus (Matt 16:26). Do everything possible to work out your salvation with fear and trembling (Phil 2:12-13).

WHY DO SOME PEOPLE RECEIVE GRACE AND OTHERS DO NOT?

According to Scripture, everyone receives Grace (e.g., Titus 2:11-14), but it all depends on obedience to God's commandments. Most people do what they like and so destroy themselves, instead of obeying God for blessings.
