The Blessings of God at a Marriage Ceremony (A Theology of Marriage)
Text John 2:1-11; Revelation 19:6-9
God loves marriage. Our first reading is about how a couple invited Jesus to their wedding celebration, and the lessons it holds for us. The second reading is about the future wedding in God’s kingdom; only those born again (John 3:3-5) shall be invited in.
In John 2:1-11, the couple invited Jesus and His disciples to their marriage ceremony. Although the whole universe is for God, unless you put Him first, He is still waiting and knocking on the door of your life (e.g. Rev 3:20).
Life problems: They had no more wine
Because we live in a fallen world, there will always be problems—sources: sin, lack of proper planning, the devil, friends, etc. However, our problems should lead us to God for help. When the people had no more wine, Mary called upon Jesus to help. All that the people had to do was to follow Jesus’s instructions. The wine Jesus provided was better than what the couple bought. Scripture, life experience, and testimonies have shown that without God’s blessings, one cannot find satisfaction in life, marriage, health, children, etc. (e.g., Psalm 127:1-2; Ecclesiastes 5:18-20; Proverbs 10:22; Matt 6:33; James 1:17).
Conditions necessary for God’s blessings (e.g., Zachariah 8:14-17)
God does not just bless people; there are conditions: e.g, where there is truth, no plotting of evil, no falsehood, maintaining justice, loving each other, etc. What if your spouse is not ready to do these things for God’s blessings? You can be that vessel through which God blesses the family; this is the work of intercession (e.g., Ezekiel 22:30-31).
When the disciples saw the miracle, they believed in Jesus Christ (John 2:11).
God reveals Himself to us in what he does for us, and the aim is to help us to believe in Him. Why? Because all things are possible unto the one who can believe (Mark 9:23). E.g. Salvation of your soul (John 3:16), healing, deliverance (Mark 9:14-29). Always look out for things to help you believe in God. Conclusion: God shows us his kindness so that we will believe in him and have eternal life.
