The Supremacy of Jesus Christ
(An exploration of who Jesus Christ is)
God the Father has given Jesus Christ preeminence- superior dignity and power above all created beings. God’s will is that men and women should believe in Jesus for eternal life (John 6:40); follow him, as He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). To believe in Jesus, you must hear about him (Rom 10:17); and so God even spoke from heaven about Jesus during his baptism (Matt 3:16-17) and also during the transfiguration (Luke 9:35)
Text Colossians 1:15-29: Phil 2:9-11
In these readings, God tells us about who Jesus Christ is, and our labour for Christ’s church. HIS DIVINITY: He is the image of God, has the same essence as the Father (the idea of begotten); and the fullest of God dwells in Him.
HIS TRANSCENDENCE
He is before all things (John 1:1-4); He fills the whole universe with God’s blessings and judgment. Jesus is everywhere.
He is the source of life and light, and God’s blessings.
All things were created for him and through him and for him; and all things are reconciled in him. In him, people can find what they are searching for in life. He brings the good news to all creation, even imprisoned spirits( Acts 9 1-5;1 Pet 3:19). He has sent the Holy Spirit to the world for eternal life, love, self-discipline, and missions (Acts 1:8; 2 Tim 1:7). He has given his name to believers to pray through to God (John 14:13-14).
EXALTED ABOVE ALL POWERS, THRONES, KINGDOMS
Every knee in the universe bows to Jesus. Jesus is the head of the church. He is the first to rise from death ( to offer redemption from sin and death) to form a new family for God by faith.
THE CALL
That men and women should believe in Him for eternal life (Mark 8:34-38); follow him to build his church (Matt 16:18), as he is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:16).
